Understanding Asthma and its Causes

Asthma is a condition that affects people of all ages, from young children to adults. There’s no clear reason why some individuals suffer from asthma while others do not. With asthma, the airway leading to the lungs becomes narrow, making it difficult to breathe. It’s believed to be induced by a combination of environmental factors and genetics, so there’s no real way to predict who will develop it, or why.

There are 2 forms of asthma- allergic, and non-allergic. Allergic asthma is triggered by allergens, and it can be treated with medication. Non-allergic asthma is triggered by things like anxiety, strenuous physical activity, dry air, smoke, and more.

What are the Symptoms of Asthma?

Symptoms vary, but there are many signs that may indicate an asthmatic condition. Common symptoms include:

  • Coughing and wheezing
  • Shortness of breath, struggling to catch one’s breath
  • Chest pain when breathing, a feeling of tightness
  • Difficulty breathing while sleeping

What Triggers an Asthma Attack?

There are many different things that can trigger an asthma attack, and individuals with the condition will find some things cause them more problems than others. Common triggers include dust mites, mold, pollen, pet dander, pollutants in the air, cold air, and strenuous physical activity.

Preventing Asthma Attacks

One of the best ways to prevent asthma attacks is by identifying triggers so that they can be avoided. For those suffering from allergic asthma, this could mean a variety of things. If dust is a trigger, it would be very important to keep the home as clean and dust-free as possible. Vacuuming often, washing linens regularly, and sweeping and dusting daily should help.

While there is no cure for asthma, there are many treatment options available today. Knowing triggers is key to managing symptoms and preventing attacks. If you or someone in your household is suffering from allergic asthma, be sure to do your part to help keep the home healthy and clean.
