6 Autumn Wellness Tips to Keep You and Your Family Healthy This Season

Autumn can be a difficult time for some of us. Seasonal allergies and large temperature swings can have negative effect on how we feel. Below are some tips on staying healthy and comfortable.

Schedule a Check-up and Get Your Vaccines

This is a great time to schedule your annual check-up to make sure you are in good health. It’s also the perfect place to get your flu shot and any other vaccines to prepare for the busy holiday season!

Boost Your Immune System

With cold and flu season right around the corner, you’ll want to help your body out and give it some things that will help to fight against infections. Make sure you are eating a diet high in healthy fruits and veggies, cook your meats thoroughly, be active and exercise regularly, wash your hands regularly, try to avoid touching your face, cover your mouth when you sneeze or cough, and do your best to get enough sleep every night.

Start Taking a Vitamin D Supplement, if You Aren’t Already

As the days get shorter, most people won’t be exposed to as much sun vitamin D as they got in summer. Vitamin D is very important as it helps your body control infections, reduce inflammation, reduce cancer cell growth and it plays a critical role in building bone. In that case, it’s a good idea to make sure you get enough of this valuable vitamin.

Stay Active Outside, Enjoy the Weather, and Keep It Fun

You might be tempted to brush off your regular exercising since everything seems so much busier for this time of year, but don’t! Just make your exercise fun by enjoying all the activities the fall season has to offer. Go on hikes to enjoy the nice weather, find your way through corn mazes, take a bike ride to enjoy the changing leaves, do some gardening, or maybe even play some sports.

Make Healthy Food Choices and Buy Seasonal Foods

Pumpkin spice lattes aren’t the only offerings for this time of year. As well as pumpkins and other winter squash (ex. Acorn squash, butternut squash, spaghetti squash), there are apples, cranberries, pears, turnips, beets, broccoli, kiwi, and kale in season right now. Take Time for Yourself and Focus On Your Mental Health

Be kind to yourself. Do the things that make you happy. Carve some time out to work on hobbies, read, listen to music, meditate, or spend some time with loved ones. Your stress hormones will thank you.
